Coach Whip

Name: Coach Whip

Scientific Name: Masticophis flagellum

Endangered Status: Species of Least Concern

Info: These long bodied snakes are very slender and have big eyes with round pupils.  They are a light brown color with a dark brown head.  This color helps protect them in their preferred habitat: the dunes.   They like to eat frogs, lizards, toads, and often inhabit gopher tortoise burrows.  These snakes will lift their head similar to a cobra to protect themselves but often find themselves moving away at the first sign of danger.

Sightings: Near Omni Pool, Ocean Links greenspace, under Boardwalks to the beach
