Yaupon Holly


Name: Yaupon Holly

Scientific Name: Ilex vomitoria

Info: Often used to brew tea, yaupon holly is the only plant in north american to have caffeine in its leaves.  The native americans would brew a drink called "black drink" to use when trading with other tribes.  The caffeince levels are similar to green or black tea leaves.  The red berries on the tree are not fit for consumption whcih is the reason its species name vomitoria.
